Posted on 05/04/2018
Jostens, the leading producer of yearbooks and student-created content, today announced that Appleton West’s yearbook program has been named a 2018 Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence. The National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy.

Advisors Laura Heller and Tracy Sturtevant are proud to be the advisors for the Appleton West Clarion (formerly Appleton Clarion), a yearbook that has been in existence for over 100 years, one of the longest-running in the state.

“Our student editors truly make the difference in the unique design and theme for the book each year, and it is through their efforts that we have been able to put forth a quality product. We love working with the Clarion staff to create something special that West students will have forever, including as many of our students in the book as possible, and are proud that Jostens has recognized our book with its National Program of Excellence award for meeting that vision” West’s advisors said.

This year’s yearbook will be distributed on May 31st. Heller and Sturtevant look forward to the excitement that day brings as students receive the books that they have purchased and get a chance to relive their past school year’s experiences in its pages.

Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence Awards are presented twice a year, in spring and in fall for yearbooks delivered during the school year. The Award was presented to the Appleton West yearbook program for achieving the defined criteria in each of three following categories: creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement, and successfully managing the yearbook creation process.

“Jostens is proud to recognize those individuals who have acted as wonderful stewards by
creating an exceptional yearbook for their school and community,” said Chuck Mooty, Jostens president and CEO. “Yearbooks are a critical part of telling a school’s story, and Jostens is dedicated to supporting yearbook staff members with state-of-the-art tools and resources that help celebrate moments that matter.”

The Appleton West yearbook program will receive a gem-studded recognition pin and a banner to display in school, so the entire school community will be aware of the outstanding

Mark McQuade, Principal of Appleton West High School said that “Our yearbook advisors
continue to work with student leaders to put out one of the best yearbooks in the state, and it is good to see their hard work recognized on a national level. Yearbook is one of the most involved clubs with meetings and work sessions in the summer, on weekends throughout the school year, and on occasional long evenings during a school week.”

“Being a part of yearbook helps students practice skills such as meeting deadlines, editing work, and making difficult content choices, all important characteristics of people who have successful careers. Our advisor’s dedication to making our yearbook something our students will enjoy forever is evident in every issue, and I’m looking forward to seeing another great issue” McQuade continued.
